Wizard Wizard

Wizard, aka Serena's Wizard, is a 3½-year-old red brindle male born June 3, 2004. His sire is Kiowa Sweet Trey, making his grand sire Oswald Cobblepot, and his dam is Smart Serena, making his grand sire Molotov. Look at Wizard's record and you will see he had quite a promising racing career, even in his 64 races. On the morning of November 5, 2007, his racing career was terminated, as Wizard suffered multiple fractures of his central tarsal bone, metatarsal bone and the calcaneous on his right rear leg. This happened when he collided with another greyhound during schooling trials at Valley Race Park in Harlingen. Ironically another greyhound, Cabot suffered a fractured central tarsal bone in a totally separate incident at about the same time. Wizard and Cabot were flown to Addison Airport by "guardian angels" Jane and Michael Scott. He was immediately taken to Dr. Jeff Ellis of VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital who x-rayed and evaluated Wizard, then referred him to Dr. Bob Radasch at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center. Please read about Wizard's surgery and complications here.

Wizard is now ready to find his forever home – he is playing with toys and loves to run in his foster mom's back yard! It is not known at this time if Wizzy is small animal or cat tolerant.

Wizard

Wizard had a rough start to his life in retirement, but he has been a real trooper and is now a very happy, playful boy that enjoys running around the back yard showing all how fast he used to be! He is a true collector – mostly of toys – but a shoe that is left lying around can sometimes be found in his crate as well. Wizard is an easy-going boy and is getting along well with the other greyhounds in his foster home. His silly, playful personality is really starting to emerge and it is evident why he was a favorite at his racing kennel!

Wizard is quite a tall boy with beautiful brindle markings and the most gorgeous eyes I have ever seen. He is a very uniquely handsome boy that will endear himself to you as soon as you meet him. He loves affection and will stand next to you as long as you are willing to keep petting him. He is also a leaner!

When Wizard is not collecting toys or napping, he can be found running around with a toy in his mouth and tossing it in the air and then pouncing on it. This is quite amazing to watch him do this on three legs! Wizard has also started to talk a little when he gets really excited, mostly when his breakfast or dinner is being prepared. I guess he is just telling me to hurry up as he does LOVE to eat. Wizard crates very well and can sometimes be found napping in there with the door open. He is also a champ with the house training. He starts pacing back and forth to let me know he has some business to take care of outside!

Wizard would do best in a home with mostly carpet or one with throw rugs around so that he can keep his balance. He is leery of tile and other slick surfaces, but knows that he can go from rug to rug and not slip. Wizard would do well as a single pet or with other dogs. He is a joy to foster and will make a wonderful companion.
